Evidence Grade A: Strong clinical evidence Based on the volume and quality of published human clinical trials.

Psyllium husk is the outer coating of Plantago ovata seeds — consisting of 70% soluble fibre that forms a thick gel in water. The gel slows digestion, feeds beneficial gut bacteria (prebiotic), lowers cholesterol (binds bile acids), regulates blood glucose, and dramatically improves bowel regularity. It is FDA-approved for a health claim: psyllium (7 g/day) reduces risk of heart disease when combined with a low-fat diet.

Key Benefits

  • Constipation & IBS relief
  • LDL cholesterol reduction
  • Blood glucose management
  • Microbiome feeding (prebiotic)
  • Weight management (satiety)
  • Haemorrhoid relief

Plain psyllium husk powder (99% psyllium); avoid flavoured versions with added sugars

Dosage

5–10 g/day (1–2 teaspoons) in 8+ oz water, 1–3 times daily

⚠ Safety Notes

Always take with a full glass of water. Inadequate hydration can cause choking or intestinal blockage. Start slowly to reduce gas and bloating. May reduce absorption of medications — take medications 1 hour before or 4 hours after psyllium.
