The plant compound that rivals metformin for blood sugar control
Berberine is an alkaloid found in several plants (Berberis, goldenseal, Oregon grape). It activates AMPK — the cellular energy sensor and metabolic master switch — producing effects similar to metformin on blood glucose, lipids, and mitochondrial function. Multiple RCTs compare it favourably to metformin for type 2 diabetes management, with additional benefits for lipid profiles and gut microbiome.
