Chromium

The insulin-sensitising trace mineral for blood sugar and cravings

Evidence Grade: C — Preliminary evidence Metabolic Health
C
Evidence Grade C: Preliminary evidence Based on the volume and quality of published human clinical trials.

Chromium is an essential trace mineral that enhances insulin signalling by potentiating the insulin receptor's tyrosine kinase activity. As chromodulin, it amplifies insulin's ability to lower blood glucose and transport amino acids into cells. Interest primarily centres on blood sugar regulation, carbohydrate cravings, and body composition. Evidence is modest but consistent for glycaemic improvements in type 2 diabetes.

Key Benefits

  • Insulin sensitivity enhancement
  • Blood glucose stabilisation
  • Carbohydrate and sugar cravings reduction
  • Triglyceride reduction
  • Lean mass support (combined with exercise)

Best Form

Chromium picolinate (best-studied for glycaemic effects); chromium nicotinate (GTF chromium) for overall metabolic health

Dosage

200–1,000 mcg/day chromium picolinate

⚠ Safety Notes

Relatively safe in the dose ranges studied. Very high doses of chromium picolinate may cause kidney damage (rare, case reports only). Trivalent chromium (Cr³⁺ in supplements) is safe; hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺ in industry) is toxic — these are entirely different.
