The direct serotonin precursor for mood, sleep, and appetite
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a naturally occurring amino acid and the immediate precursor to serotonin (5-HT). Derived from the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia, it crosses the blood-brain barrier and raises serotonin levels more directly than L-tryptophan. Because serotonin cannot cross the blood-brain barrier, 5-HTP (which can) is the preferred supplemental route to raising brain serotonin.
Standard 5-HTP; sustained-release formulas for mood stability
50–300 mg/day (start at 50 mg to assess tolerance)
Do NOT combine with SSRIs, MAOIs, tramadol, triptans, or St John's Wort — risk of serotonin syndrome (potentially life-threatening). Always inform your doctor. Never exceed 400 mg/day. May cause GI nausea — take with food.
