Vitamin K2 (specifically MK-7 menaquinone-7) activates matrix Gla protein (MGP) and osteocalcin — two proteins that direct calcium to bones and prevent its deposition in arteries and soft tissues. Distinct from K1 (clotting), K2 primarily governs calcium metabolism. Often low in Western diets; found in natto, aged cheese, and fermented foods.
