Curcumin is the primary bioactive polyphenol in turmeric (Curcuma longa). It inhibits NF-ÎșB, the master regulator of inflammation, and modulates multiple inflammatory pathways (COX-2, TNF-α, IL-6). Despite strong mechanistic evidence, poor bioavailability is its Achilles heel — standard curcumin from turmeric powder is <1% absorbed. Enhanced formulations (Meriva, BCM-95, Theracurmin, CurcuWIN) dramatically improve absorption.

Key Benefits

  • Joint pain & arthritis relief
  • Systemic inflammation reduction
  • Cognitive protection
  • Gut health
  • Depression support (adjunct)
  • Antioxidant protection

Best Form

Theracurmin (27× better absorption than standard), Meriva (phytosome), BCM-95, or curcumin + piperine (black pepper extract, 20× absorption boost)

Dosage

400–1,000 mg curcuminoids/day with enhanced absorption formulation

⚠ Safety Notes

Safe at recommended doses. High doses (>8 g/day) may cause GI discomfort. Avoid in gallstone disease. Mild anticoagulant properties at high doses.
