Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a medicinal mushroom whose primary bioactive compounds — hericenones and erinacines — stimulate synthesis of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). NGF is essential for the growth, maintenance, and survival of neurons. Unlike most nootropics that temporarily boost neurotransmitters, lion's mane appears to support neurogenesis and nerve repair over time.

Key Benefits

  • NGF/BDNF stimulation (neurogenesis)
  • Mild cognitive impairment improvement
  • Peripheral neuropathy support
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Immune modulation (beta-glucans)
  • Gut health (mucosal protection)

Best Form

Dual extract (water + alcohol) containing both beta-glucans AND hericenones/erinacines; fruiting body preferred over mycelium-on-grain (lower active compound content)

Dosage

500–3,000 mg/day fruiting body extract

⚠ Safety Notes

Very well-tolerated. Rare allergic reactions in people with mushroom allergies. Start at lower doses; some users report mild GI discomfort. Avoid if immunocompromised without medical advice. Results build over 4–8 weeks.
